How to make a Federal Balance Due tax payment

Don’t forget to pay any amount you owe to the IRS.

To make an IRS direct payment, you can do so quickly and securely online. Ensure you are using your personal checking account to make the payment for your liability.  

IRS Balance Due payment instructions:  

You will need your checking account information, your filing status, and your address from one of your last two personal tax returns. 

  1. Go to  www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay
  2. Click the "Make a Payment" button. 
  3. On the Tax Information screen, select the following options: 
    • Reason: "Balance Due"
    • Apply Payment to: "Income Tax – Form 1040"
    • Tax Period for Payment: "Correct prior year"
  4. Fill out the fields in the next section, using your filing status and address from last year. 
  5. Use the primary taxpayer on your personal tax return for verification. Then check the accept box at the bottom. (Note: The IRS can get confused if you use your information, but your spouse is listed as the primary taxpayer on your tax return.)  
  6. Enter the payment amount, payment details, and email address
  7. Finish the payment wizard and ensure your payment has gone through
  8. Upload your receipt to Formations for our records using the Upload Link  

You can also create a Taxpayer Account with the IRS to view prior tax filing info, make/view payments, and access other valuable information.
