How to make your Business or Franchise tax payment?

Some states charge a tax on the business itself, separate from your personal income taxes. Follow the steps below to ensure successful payment.

This payment is made by your business directly to the state, not through Formations payroll, so use your business bank account. Your recommended payment amount and due date are in your Formations Dashboard.

California

You will need your business bank account information and your 7-digit California Entity ID. This is not your EIN. You can find it in the upper left corner of your CA Form 100S, or by searching your business name at https://bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov/search/business

  1. Go to https://www.ftb.ca.gov/pay
  2. Under the Business column, click "Use Web Pay Business"
  3. Select Entity Type: "Corporation" (select this even if your business is an LLC taxed as an S-Corporation)
  4. Enter your 7-digit California Entity ID and your name, then continue
  5. For tax form, select "Form 100, 100S, 100W, or 100X"
  6. For payment type, select "Estimated Tax Payment (Form 100-ES)"
  7. Enter the period dates for the current tax year: beginning January 1 and ending December 31. (Note: the FTB applies the payment to whatever year you enter here, so double-check the year.)
  8. Enter the payment amount from your Formations Dashboard and the withdrawal date
  9. Enter your business bank account information, your email, and your phone number
  10. Review, check the authorization box, and click Submit
  11. Save your confirmation and upload it to your Formations Dashboard under Taxes > Tax Payments

Other states

Each state has its own portal. Common ones: Texas franchise tax is paid through the Comptroller's Webfile at https://comptroller.texas.gov, Delaware franchise tax through the Division of Corporations at https://corp.delaware.gov, and Washington's business taxes through My DOR at https://secure.dor.wa.gov. Your Formations Dashboard shows the exact tax and amount, and your Formations team can point you to the right portal if you are not sure.

If you have questions about the amount or the due date, reach out to your Formations team. We are happy to help.
